Evelyn

1 March 2018

Inner city Sydney circa 1935, and Evelyn is in trouble …

Quite a number of years ago 7-ON had a two-week workshop with director Lee Lewis and the Sydney Theatre Company’s resident troupe of actors on our Long Shadows project. Inspired by the City of Shadows exhibition of police photographs from the first half of the twentieth century, Long Shadows was conceived as large-scale site specific theatre. Unfortunately it never made it into production—perhaps because of its large scale. But we did find outlets for aspects of it. We are the Ghosts of the Future was produced at The Rocks Museum of Discovery in 2015 and some of the individually written monologues and playlets have been produced and published. Although it wasn’t written at the time of the STC workshop, Evelyn did come out of that venture. I was always interested in the crimes that aren’t considered crimes any more—homosexuality, bigamy (yes OK, still a crime, but not something people need to resort to these days), and abortion.

All of which is a roundabout way of saying development work is never wasted because you don’t know what production opportunities may arise …

Anyway, my monologue Evelyn is being produced as part of Short + Sweet Sydney 2018.

Evelyn is on during Week 5 of the festival.
Thursday 1 to Saturday 3 March at 7:30 pm and Sunday 4 March at 2:30 & 6:30 pm
at the Tom Mann Theatre, 136 Chalmers Street, Surry Hills
