Artichokes in Melbourne Botanic Gardens

I took a break from the last day of the NonfictionNow 2012 conference to visit Melbourne Botanic Gardens. Ever on the lookout for thistles, I photographed these fabulous-looking artichokes growing in the kitchen garden of Observatory House, once the residence of the Government Astronomer. Do such positions still exist in this country—Government Astronomer, Government Botanist, Poet Laureate? Probably not …
